Lord's
Prayer
I had been
teaching my three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the
Lord's Prayer for several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after me
the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go
solo.
I listened
with pride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end of
the
prayer: "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed,
"but
deliver us some E-mail.

Betty
Cheadle
We sorrow but not
as those without hope in reporting the death of Betty Cheadle. Our
hearts and prayers of sympathy go out to Dick and the family.

THANKS
AGAIN!
I’m writing to you this morning as I sit
at the kitchen table surrounded by moving boxes, watching the sun rise
over Mt. Hood and listening to the birds as they feast at the feeder.
So much has happened in the last month that it seems almost impossible
to comprehend it all. We have sold our house here in Molalla and have
bought a new one in Gresham very close to our children, grandchildren
and Susan’s father so we have been busy sorting, packing and
coordinating the move.
We do want to say how grateful we are
for the wonderful way in which you sent us forth on our last Sunday.
Your gifts were so very generous and we are tremendously grateful. The
gift certificate to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the money to help
with travel and lodging, and all the cards filled with well wishes were
very much appreciated.
What is beyond measure, however, and
that which sustains us daily is the extravagant expressions of love and
support which you shared with us. We are simply humbled by it, and also
envious of whoever comes to be your next pastor.
May we say thank you one more time for
these past four and one-half years and for your grand send-off in true
Smyrna style with what else but a potluck! We do hold you in our hearts
and know that God has special things in store for you.
Peace and grace,
Jim and Susan

A Voice
from the Past
While volunteering at Molalla
Public Library, Amber ran across a book which some of you may
have in your homes. Though much of the information in this
article from
Churches Along the Oregon Trail,
published in 1976, is in Smyrna’s centennial book, we found it
most interesting.

SMYRNA UNITED CHURCH OF
CHRIST—CANBY, OREGON
It was in January 1890, after a
funeral service, that the Rev. Mr. Parker was invited to preach
at a schoolhouse in the area; however, it wasn’t until June of
that year that the church was organized as a Presbyterian
congregation with a membership of twelve.
In January 1891 they began
erecting a church building and the first sermon was on April 5,
1891. The efforts and donations of the many interested persons
built the building with their own hands. As the organization
was poor financially but rich in zeal and spiritual life, it was
voted to be known as Smyrna.
In November, 1891, it was voted
to change the organization to a Congregational organization and
such was recognized by the council in April 1892. It is said
this was done in order that women could hold church offices
which was not allowed at the time by the Presbyterian Council.
A women’s group, now Women’s
Fellowship, was organized in 1897 and has been “at work” for the
church ever since, except during World War I their efforts were
used for Red Cross work.
Since the beginning, various
changes have taken place — remodeling the interior several
times, and two additions have been added to the building —
Friendship House 1946-1953; Memorial Hall in 1971; also a three
bedroom parsonage built in 1955.
Thirty ministers have served
this parish. For seventy-five years, ministers were shared with
other churches; as many as four churches made up the parish.
Since September 1966, almost ten years now, we have had a
minister serving only our parish.
From the beginning we have had
continuous church and Sunday School services. In spite of
depression, unimproved roads and no public transportation, we
carried on.
The membership roll shows 165
names with considerably less as active members. However, a
number of the members are of the third and fourth generation of
the founders.
Our present minister is the Rev.
Orville Krebs.
