One Great Hour of Sharing
Offering
We will collect our One Great Hour of Sharing
offering on Sunday, March 2. This Sunday is set aside for all the UCC
churches to support our world wide relief efforts. The money collected
will go to support relief efforts in over 80 countries. Individual
projects involving clean water, education, healthcare, small business
micro-credit, and emergency relief efforts are supported by this
offering.
This year churches in the Central Pacific conference are being
challenged by a match. If we can increase the number of people who
support One Great Hour of Sharing by 25% over last year our
contributions will be matched 50 cents on the dollar.
This is an important ministry of our church, and we hope everyone will
participate.

No matter who you are,
or where you are on life’s journey,
you are welcome here.
Mission Statement
Smyrna United Church of Christ is striving to be:
 |
A place of peace where we teach the word of God and the story of God’s
love. |
 |
A spiritual haven where we accept and care for all humanity in an
outreach of grace. |
 |
A lighthouse of God’s light, where worship, teaching, learning and
spiritual growth take place in community powered by thought and action. |
 |
A Christian people, working for God’s realm in ecumenical
harmony with other people of faith and conviction. |
|
What’s new?
One of the well deserved criticisms of the church is that we never do
anything new. Of course,
many or our old traditions are worth preserving while we experiment with
some new things.
New Web Sites
The UCC has had a web site for national news for many years at
www.ucc.org. There is a wealth of information on this site including a
special section on Science and Technology. You can find the pastoral
letter on Science under the section entitled, Big Things.
The Central Pacific Conference of the UCC also has a new web site-
www.cpcucc.org. The site has a great deal of information on the
activities of our conference.
Of course the best web site is still www.Smyrna-ucc.org. This site is
updated monthly and has a complete calendar for the coming month, as
well as links to many of the photographs we have taken in recent months.
Name Tags
Thanks to Joel Daniels, we now have name tags. One of our goals is to
have everyone who visits our church feel welcome, and we are hoping the
name tags will help visitors to feel at home. Of course, the name tags
will help all of us to learn each others names as well.
Adult Sunday School
About 15 of us have been meeting at 9:45 for adult Sunday School. We
have been studying the lectionary for the last few months. Starting the
Sunday after Easter we will begin looking at the Just Peace materials of
the UCC. Over 20 years ago our denomination realized that there could be
no lasting peace, without justice. We will look at the issue of justice
from the standpoint of poverty, the environment, inclusiveness, and of
course war. There is always room for more students and the coffee will
be on.
Maundy Thursday
If you have never been part of a foot washing service, you can also have
a new experience on Thursday, March 20th at 7PM. We will remember Jesus’
attitude toward service with a combined foot washing service and
communion.
I hope that God is blessing you on your Lenten journey.
Peace,
--- Pastor Dave
