Summer Worship Schedule
On
Sunday, June 1, we moved to our summer schedule. Worship will be at 10
a.m. Youth Sunday School will continue to meet during the worship hour
for the summer. Adult classes will resume in the fall.
Camp Adams-
worship and camping!
This year our annual Camp Adams
worship service will be on Sunday, July 20 at 11 a.m.
Following the service we will have a pot luck lunch.
In addition to the outdoor service, we also have the opportunity
this year to spend the night at Camp Adams the evening before.
We will be meeting at Camp Adams at 4:30 Saturday afternoon.
Dinner will be hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, and we are
looking forward to outdoor games and singing around the camp
fire (with marsh mellows).
Sunday morning we will have breakfast together. There will be
two cabins- a boys cabin and a girls cabin. Boys and girls of
all ages are welcome.
The church will buy the food in bulk ahead of time so all you
need to bring is a sleeping bag, a pillow, a change of clothes
(perhaps a swim suit), and your toiletries.
Participants will be asked to make a donation to Camp Adams as
payment for participating in the overnight.
There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the Narthex.
We need to know approximately how much food to buy. Questions
can be directed to Chris Bangs, Levonne Gano or Pastor Dave.

On
the last 4 Wednesdays in July (9, 16, 23, and 30) we will be holding pot
luck salad suppers at 6 p.m.. Everyone will be asked to bring their
favorite salads we will have the opportunity to share both our salads
and our time with each others.
Following supper we will go through some exercises to explore what kind
of a church we want to become. We will explore different church models,
discuss our strengths and weaknesses, take a look at the changes in our
community, and try to develop some goals for our church. A part of our
time will be spent dreaming about how we can use our new expended
building to serve the community.
We will also help the Search Committee describe the qualities we are
looking for in a pastor.
Join us as we dream dreams, and see visions (Joel 3:28).

She’s a
Winner!
Earlier this year, Sandra
Mahar entered the 2008/2009 North Willamette Phone Directory
Photo Contest, and she just recently found out that her picture
was published in the Rural Focus Magazine section of the Phone
Directory.
She received honorable
mention and $50.00. So, please take a look at her beautiful
picture of Smyrna Cemetery during a sunset. This was the second
time Sandra had won this contest. The first time was back in
2004, when she won the grand prize, and had her Butte Creek
Falls picture published on the front cover.
Sandra really enjoys
taking pictures, and is the Photographer for Smyrna United
Church of Christ. You can see some of the pictures she has taken
at some of Smyrna’s events, on the Smyrna |
Strawberry
Festival
It
was a lovely sunny day for strawberries and Yoder ice cream, cake and
pie. The building equipment had been moved out of the way for the event
and parking around addition-in progress was managed expertly by the
traffic directors.
This successful and tasty fundraiser brought in $1093.35
for Smyrna United Church of Christ.

Ministry of
Presence
One of my daily routines is to read a
devotional book put out by Guideposts. The June 1st reading reminded me
of an old colleague of mine in the insurance business who commented to
me that he considered any meeting that he attended where he didn’t learn
anything a waste of time. My reply was that sometimes you are asked to
attend meetings not for what you can learn or take away, but for what
you can contribute.
The Guidepost story that triggered my
memory was the story of a married couple, both of whom came down with
cancer at about the same time. The husband had been diagnosed with a
malignant tumor in the brain, and the wife had ovarian cancer. Talk
about a rough year!
While visiting with them, the pastor
asked the usual question, “How are you doing?” After a quick update on
chemotherapy treatments, the wife admitted that her world had become
very small. She avoided going out in public or participating in many
events. She didn’t feel good, she didn’t like her wig, and she worried
about her immune system.
The pastor’s reply was, “This may not
make sense to you, but people need to see you. For their good. You
encourage others when you show up. It is a ….. ministry of presence.”
The following Sunday the couple
attend church, but left during the last hymn so they wouldn’t have to
answer all the well meaning questions. In the days that followed they
received several cards remarking on the joy of seeing them in church and
the courage that they gave to others.
While the ministry remains a bit of a
mystery to me, I do know that there is a value in just being present— at
church, when you visit with neighbors, when you call on the sick and the
lonely. You don’t need any special training— just be yourself and be
present. For where two or three are gathered, God will be in the midst
of them.

UCY Is Back
UCY took a little break, however now it is time to start
going places again.
July 13th - UCY will be going to Bullwinkles at 2 p.m. to have
some pizza and experience some of the fun activities they have there.
Please make sure you are at Smyrna by 1:45, so we can leave at 2:00, and
plan on it being a long event. Please let Angie Stierle or Sandra Mahar
know if you plan on going, and also let us know if you need a ride home.
Building Project Update
Like most of us, I was not really going to believe we
would be building until I saw something happening on site. If there is
any remaining doubt, drive by and see the progress. The power has been
moved to the new box, the drain pipes have been installed around the
perimeter, the forms are off the footings and the foundation, the floor
joists are in place, the sub-floor is in down and today the first wall
went up. The contractor did a great job of cleaning up the site so we
could manage to park everyone for the Strawberry Festival which went off
without a hitch. We have been given July 7 as the date to have the stage
and class room above cleaned out so the contractor can begin that
demolition. On Sunday the 29, we will ask for helpers to stay after
church and help remove everything.
We are still accepting pledges and donations to reduce
the amount we will need to borrow from our members. Thank you members
and friends who have stepped forward to support this project. ---Joel
for the Building Committee
Overheard at the Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June
21, “What’s that platform outside the church?” Monday the walls began to
rise.

Pennies
For Peace
We will continue collecting Pennies for Peace all summer. We
will be joining with other groups around the country that are
collecting pennies to support the building of elementary schools
in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The program was started by Greg Mortenson, a mountain climber
who first became familiar with the lack of schooling in Pakistan
after trying to climb K-2, the second tallest mountain in the
world .
While Greg failed in his attempt to reach the summit, he has
succeeded in starting a movement to build schools for children.
You can read Greg’s story in Three Cups of Tea.
The penny is 1% of a dollar, and represents a small part of our
wealth. By collecting pennies we hope to teach our children that
they can make a difference in the lives of others around the
world. Of course we hope even the oldest children will
participate.
We will collect pennies all summer. You will be able to find the
jars at the back of the sanctuary. How many times can we fill
the jar?
You can also learn more about pennies for peace at the web site:
