Glenda
Yoder Sano Scholarship Awards
The Smyrna United Church of
Christ Scholarship Committee has granted two Glenda Yoder Sano
scholarships to members of the Smyrna UCC community
for the 2009-2010 academic calendar year. Each will receive
$800.00 to attend a four year university. The students are:
Carly Sether - $800.00 scholarship to continue attending
Western Oregon University
Amber Rogers Ferris - $800.00
scholarship to continue attending Western Oregon University
This is the sixth year
that Smyrna has provided scholarships to church members for
furthering their education after high school. These two church
members are active in our church community. The church
scholarship is granted in memory of Glenda Yoder Sano, a 1962
Molalla High graduate and a long time member of the Smyrna
Church family, who, as many of you know, was instrumental in
starting and continuing many youth programs in our church.
Glenda also was a member of the Rural Dell School Board of
Directors. We wish them all continued success in their
educational activities.

Many of the names on the prayer list come from a list of people
that the Diaconate sends cards to every month. Some are get well
cards, others are simply “thinking of you” cards. If you know
anyone who should be on the prayer list in the Behold, please
let Jeannie or Elaine know. If they would enjoy receiving cards
let someone in the Diaconate know.
Healing and
better health:
Ethel and Ernie Henderson, Robert Kyrk, Jean Schriever Epley
“Thinking of
you”:
Dick Cheadle, Eileen Boss, Frank Peterson, Eleanor Holbrook, Gale
Blatchford, Adam and Patty Mayer, Jack & Willa Kieling, Bill and Amy
Morrison.
Sympathy:
Our prayers of sympathy and support go to the Hester family in
the loss of Heidi’s fiancée. We also send prayers of sympathy
and support to Eileen Boss and her family. Eileen’s brother,

Leveling
the Playing Field
Several years ago I attended a seminar
that suggested successful people should have a mission statement. In
1988 I thought my mission was “to make the community in which I live a
better place through sharing, affirming, and bringing people together.”
Today, my statement is a little shorter- “to level the playing field.”
My family has had plenty of advantages
in life. I also recognize that there are many people in the world who
have many more challenges than I do. My mission has become working to
try and level the playing field for those who don’t have as many
advantages as I do.
For many years we have supported the
work of CARE, the international relief agency that is trying to reduce
world poverty by building clean water systems, promoting education for
girls, providing health care and AIDS relief and now through micro
enterprise. Jean and I will be traveling to Bolivia the first week of
June to observe CARE’s work first hand, and we look forward to sharing
with you all that we learn.
You can also work on leveling the
playing field by supporting the work of MercyCorps- an international
relief agency head quartered right here in Portland. Kathy Robinson has
been working for MercyCorps and I am sure she would love to tell you
more about their work.
There is a new agency supporting micro
enterprise with loans as small as $25 called KIVA. You can choose an
individual business to support in a far away country and follow their
business success over the internet. Once you are paid back your loan,
you can either take back your money or loan it again. John and Florence
Pease can tell you more about KIVA or you can look them up at
www.KIVA.org.
Of course, the Peace Corps has been
working to level the playing field for decades. Ryan Yoder can tell you
more about their work as he gets ready to join them this summer.
Sharing our blessings is one of the most
Christian things we can do.

Maclaren
Party
Our Christmas/ Valentine party
for the boys in the Kincaid cottage at Maclaren was greatly
appreciated. Now we have the opportunity to be with the boys
again as a celebration of summer.
We are going to host a party for
the boys on June 27 from 1:30
to 3:30. Food will be provided. It is up to Smyrna to provide
volunteers to visit with the boys. Last time we had a rousing
game of pictionary. Several of the boys have expressed interest
in a rematch.
For security reasons we have to
tell Maclaren the names of anyone who will be participating
ahead of time. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board.
Volunteers must be at least 21
years old. Once you sign up, all you have to do is wear modest
casual clothing and meet at the security gate at Maclaren at
1:30 on the 27th. |
