Summer Salad Suppers
We will continue our tradition of Summer Salad Suppers with pot luck
suppers on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. on Tuesday August 4, 11, and 18.
We will be reviewing material on the environment put out by the
Thoughtful Christian, the same company that prepared the material we
used to review the Lord’s Prayer. Come for the fellowship and to explore
new ways to care for the environment- with a focus on land, water, and
air.

Camp Adams Worship and Picnic July 19, 2009

At Vacation Bible School 2009 everyone encountered fun. The Camp
E.D.G.E. message, Experience & Discover God Everywhere, was a powerful
message that all the children enjoyed learning. We had a total of 16
children come through the doors of Smyrna with an average of 12 per
night.
Christian Education Committee would like to thank all the people
who made the delicious dinners each night. Thank you's also go out to
Carly for her musical talents, as well as acting out our camp mascot "Sparx"
the dog; Audrey for her opening and closing leadership and great
decorations; Sandra for being the Camp Counselor and craft helper; Tina
for leading all the wonderful crafts; Becca for calming everyone down at
reflection time and sharing what we learned; Levonne for registering all
the children; Rick for helping with recreation activities; Ginger & Mary
for bringing a different animal each night for the children to discover;
and last but not least Pastor Dave for his great mission work and
leading the fun recreation activities.
I would also like to say that I
enjoyed dressing up as a different character each night and telling the
children thoughtful life stories of our Savior Jesus Christ. The
children were such good listeners. I know they will go out and spread
God's message throughout the land. Will you?

let Jeannie or Elaine know. If they would enjoy receiving cards

What Sustains Me
Only one letter separates vocation (a divine call to service) from
vacation (a respite from work). Many of us take vacations over the
summer to recharge our batteries. A recent issue of Sojourners magazine
had an article entitled “What Sustains Me” with advice from 17 church
leaders on how they maintain their faith. The following stuck me as
particularly good ideas for all of us:
 | Seek goodness in all |
 | Say thank you |
 | Open yourself to community- find support in others |
 | Find a prayer partner- be accountable to one another, and find out
what the Lord is telling you to do |
 | Stick your face in the Bible |
 | Give it away- money, possessions, time, love |
 | Take a silent retreat- for an hour or a day |
My wife is sustained through hikes in the Cascades. Our friends call
them “death marches”! Jean finds strength and renewal in being in
nature- and she enjoys the physical challenges of pushing herself.
I find renewal in the various programs we have for children. Vacation
Bible School is exhausting- and a great deal of fun. The enthusiasm of
the children is wonderful, and their joy in discovering the world around
them helps to keep me on a positive path.
We truly were blessed this year at Vacation Bible School by the gift
of Mary Namit and Ginger Redlinger sharing with us animals each night.
We had the opportunity to see and hold a baby ground squirrel
(Sunshine), a bearded dragon lizard (Sydney), two chinchillas (Dusty and
Luke), a rosy boa constrictor (Rosario) and a Mali Uromastyx lizard (Blitzen).
Having the opportunity to pet them was a nightly reminder of God’s love
for this world. We truly did experience and discover God everywhere.
Of course, resting and going on vacation, also helps to sustain us as
well. I hope that your summer continues to be a time of renewal and
blessings.
