Christ/Glenda Yoder Sano Scholarship Committee will be accepting
applications through April 30th, 2010. The applications are
available in the narthex of the church or by contacting Rick or

This is
the seventh year that Smyrna has provided church members
scholarships for furthering their education after high school.
The church scholarship is granted in memory of Glenda Yoder

Smyrna Church family, who, as many of you know, was instrumental
in starting and continuing many youth programs in our church.

that the Diaconate sends cards to every month. Some are get well
cards, others are simply “thinking of you” cards. If you know
anyone who should be on the prayer list in the Behold, please
let Jeannie or Elaine know. If they would enjoy receiving cards
let someone in the Diaconate know.

“I
Believe”
The following was sent to me as an email- good thoughts for our
spring!
 | I Believe... That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean
they don't love each other. And just because they don't
argue, it doesn't mean they do love each other. I
Believe...That we don't have to change friends if we understand that
friends change. |
 | I Believe....that no matter how good a friend is, they're going
to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for
that. |
 | I Believe...that true friendship continues to grow, even over
the longest distance. Same goes for true love. |
 | I Believe... that you can do something in an instant that will
give you heartache for life. |
 | I Believe....that it's taking me a long time to become the
person I want to be. |
 | I Believe...that you should always leave loved ones with loving
words. It may be the last time you see them. |
 | I Believe.... that you can keep going long after you think you
can't. |
 | I Believe....that we are responsible for what we do, no matter
how we feel. |
 | I Believe...that either you control your attitude or it controls
you. |
 | I Believe...that heroes are the people who do what has to be
done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.
|
 | I Believe....that my best friend and I can do anything or
nothing and have the best time. |
 | I Believe....that sometimes the people you expect to kick you
when you're down will be the ones to help you get back up.
|
 | I Believe...that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be
angry, But that doesn't give me the right to be cruel. |
 | I Believe....that maturity has more to do with what types of
experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to
do with how many birthdays you've celebrated. |
 | I Believe...that no matter how bad your heart is broken the
world doesn't stop for your grief, but God does. |
 | I Believe....that our background and circumstances may have
influenced who we are, but, we are responsible for who we become.
|
 | I Believe....two people can look at the exact same thing and see
something totally different. |
 | I Believe...that your life can be changed in a matter of hours
by people who don't even know you. |
 | I Believe...that even when you think you have no more to
give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to
help in some way. |
 | I Believe....that it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by
others. Sometimes, you have to agree to forgive yourself.

"Sock It To 'Em
Sunday"
This special event is coming up on April 18th. New socks
are being gathered for the homeless and our hope is to have at
least 50 dozen brought for all age groups. The Stitch Club has
pledged 1 pair for each dozen given by the congregation. Blanche
Kober will be keeping a talley of socks. They can be brought any
time and there will be a "sock box" in the narthex. Let's see
what we can accomplish! |
New Pictorial Directory
We
are excited to announce that we are going to create a new pictorial
directory of our church family. The directory will help us connect names
with faces. It will also help to capture the history of our church
congregation. We hope everyone will participate. All we ask is that you
have your picture taken by the professional photographer and meet with a
Portrait Consultant at the church. Every family that participates will
receive a free directory and a complimentary 8 X 10 Custom Natural
Portrait. You will only have to come to the church once. After the
portrait is taken you will have the opportunity to order additional
portraits. The pictures will be mailed to your home. The photography
team has been scheduled for Monday, May 3 in the afternoon and evening.
Please save the date. The deacons will have sign up desks in the
Friendship Hall during the coffee hour. Friends and extended family are
welcome to participate.
Chair update:
As of March 23rd, we have 82 chairs that have been pledged toward our
goal of new upholstered stacking chairs for Friendship house. We have
one person giving 10 chairs, several giving 5 and many, many giving one
or two.
The chairs sell for $48.00 which includes shipping. They come from a
company, in business for over 80 years on the east coast, that
specializes in selling to schools and churches.
If you are able and interested in helping with this project, please
fill out the form in the narthex. Thank you to everyone who has donated
so far. If you have a question, ask a Stitch Club member.
KIVA
If you go online to www.kiva.org,
you will find that our Smyrna Kiva team now includes these people who
have made loans to people all over the world: John and Florence, David,
Rick and Levonne, Joel and Elaine, Helen, Thomas, Thelma, Ginger and
Mary, Virginia, Ginnie Ann, Ryan, Paul and Audrey, Robert, and Cheryl.
For assistance in navigating the web for this project, see Rick Gano,
Joel Daniels or John Pease.
Pastor’s Reading Shelf- April
We
Get to Carry Each Other by Greg Garrett — this book is the story of the
spiritual themes in the music of the rock band U2. The lead singer,
Bono, has become a major spokesman for justice and Aids relief in the
world. The book outlines how the gospel is expressed in their music.

The Love Revolution by Joyce Meyer— this book explores how you can
make a difference not just by acting, but also by being… being a person
who helps a friend in need…. Who helps a stranger in need … who
practices aggressive acts of kindness.
A
Just Peace Church by Susan Thistlewaite— this book explores the history
of the United Church of Christ as a peacemaking church. The book was
written in 1986 but is still timely in today’s war-torn world.

Excursions 4 All
March - No Excursion due to a busy month.
April 25th - Molalla River State Park Hike - We will be taking
a hike on the long trail that goes along the riverside, through the
trees, fields and into the forest. This natural area sits at the
confluence of the Willamette, Molalla and Pudding Rivers. The flood
plains of these rivers provide important habitat for waterfowl, wading
birds, deer, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Also, one of the
largest blue heron rookeries in the Willamette Valley is located there.
So, please bring some hiking shoes, some bottled water, a camera, and
maybe a snack or sack lunch. The time will be announced later in the
Church Bulletin Announcements. I hope to see you all there. See you on
the Excursion, Sandra J. Mahar

Milda Marie Zacher
Kelland — June 7, 1917 to March 6, 2010
Milda
was the seventh child born of Elizabetha Uttke Zacher and Frederick
Zacher in Heil, North Dakota. The family moved to Oregon and Milda grew
up in rural areas of Clackamas County. Her school years were spent in
Eby, West Linn, and Canby, where she graduated from Canby High School in
1936.
Milda married Howard P. Kelland on March 16, 1938. The couple lived
in the family home in New Era. They had one daughter, Janice Marie
Kelland, who preceded Milda in death.
Milda enjoyed hobbies such as wood working, cake decorating, sewing,
knitting, and crocheting. Some of her fondest memories included being a
den mother to her daughter’s Camp Fire Girls Troop in the early 1950’s.
In 1972 Milda and Howard moved to Canby. She joined Eastern Star,
Laurel Chapter and served a year as Worthy Matron. For 68 years, Milda
was a member of the Evangelical Church of Canby. Milda loved to read the
Canby Herald, and was in the paper a number of times herself, much to
her delight. She was somewhat of a Clackamas County unofficial
historian. She put together many scrapbooks full of information, and
enjoyed both looking at and showing them to others The Herald would
contact her from time to time regarding bits of history for different
articles they were writing.
For sometime after Howard’s passing Milda maintained their Canby
home. In 2003, she moved into the home of her great niece, Mickey
Hester, and she started attending church at Smyrna United Church of
Christ.
While living with Mickey, Milda enjoyed many new activities including
deer hunting, camping and numerous trips including weekends at the
beach. Milda helped her great niece and nephew start a non profit
organization called Cruzin’ 4 Life that raises money to support finding
cures for Vasculitis, Chrons, Cancer, Autism, and other diseases.
Milda is survived by brothers Ray Zacher of Canby and Ted Zacher of
Aurora. She is also survived by two grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
