Glenda Yoder Sano scholarships
The Smyrna United Church of Christ Scholarship Committee has
granted three Glenda Yoder Sano scholarships to members of the
Smyrna UCC community for the 2010-2011 academic calendar year.
Each will receive $800.00 to attend a four year university. The
students are:
 | Carly Sether - $800.00 scholarship to continue
attending Western Oregon University |
 | Amber Ferris - $800.00 scholarship to continue
attending Western Oregon University |
 | Amy Morrison - $800.00 scholarship to continue
attending Corban College |
This is the seventh year that Smyrna has provided church
members scholarships for furthering their education after high
school. These three church members are active in our church
community.
The church scholarship is granted in memory of Glenda
Yoder Sano, a 1963 Molalla High graduate and a long time
member of the Smyrna Church family, who, as many of you know,
was instrumental in starting and continuing many youth programs
in our church. Glenda also was a member of the Rural Dell School
Board of Directors.
We wish them all continued success in their educational
activities!

Important July Dates
Our July 4th weekend worship service will be on Saturday, July 3,
at 4 p.m. We will celebrate communion together and then have a
picnic in the grove. We are moving the service to Saturday afternoon, so
we don’t conflict with the July 4th/ Buckaroo events.
As you make your plans for this summer, be sure to set aside July
19-22 for Vacation Bible School. The Bible School will meet from 5
to 7:30 p.m. and will include a simple dinner for the children.
Also put July 24 and 25 on your calendar for our annual Camp Adams
family weekend. Families can spend the night Saturday night at Camp
Adams joining in a hike, a barbecue, and singing around the camp fire.
Sunday, July 25th we will worship at Camp Adams at 11 a.m. and have a
pot luck luncheon afterwards. Save the dates!

Cemetery News
Despite the blustery, cold weather on Saturday, May 22, a
number of hardy souls showed up to help with a general clean-up
in preparation for Memorial Day. The Cemetery Committee is
grateful for all the support. Since we sent out our annual
newsletter, we have received over $1,200 in donations.
Thanks to all who responded.
At the May Council Meeting upon the recommendation of the
Cemetery Committee, it was decided to adjust the prices for
cemetery plots to be more consistent with cemeteries in the
area. Currently we charge $150 per plot for burial and
cremations. Our proposal is to leave the charge the same
for church members and those who already have spouses buried at
Smyrna, and to raise the price for non-members to $650 per plot.
Before the church adopts this rate change, we want to have some
time to get input from our members.
It has been over twenty-five years since the current prices
were established, and Smyrna is far below prices for other
cemeteries. This would make us the same as Molalla’s two
and still less than Zion in Canby. As part of our license
with the Oregon Board of Mortuaries and Cemeteries, we do have
an obligation along with other area cemeteries to bury the
indigent.

Summer Reading
There are three new books on the Pastor’s reading shelf for you to
enjoy this summer.

Christianity for the Rest of Us by Diana Butler Bass is
a hopeful book about the neighborhood protestant church and how it is
transforming the faith. Rather than focusing on the decline of the local
church, Bass describes a number of churches around the country that have
been growing, and suggests 10 key characteristics of them.

A People’s History of Christianity
is also by Diana Butler Bass. As the title suggests this book describes
the history of Christianity from the Acts of the Apostles to today. It
is a very readable book, and may pleasantly surprise you as you learn
about the thoughts of Christians through the ages. It will also leave
you wondering how the church could have wandered so far from its roots
at times. This is a book worth reading.
Bill
Bryson’s African Diary was given to me during my recent
visit with the Hartford Insurance Company. Bryson writes in his usual
amusing style about a week he spent visiting CARE’s work in Kenya. The
book is 8 year’s old and describes a country I am not going to see on my
trip, but it does give some idea of what CARE is trying to do in Africa.
There are now about 20 books on the Pastor’s reading shelf- have a
great summer reading them.

SERRV
The Stitch Club continues to provide SERV products for your
perusal on the last Sunday each month. SERRV has been a
non-profit organization for over 60 years. Many people are able
to feed their families because of their connection with SERRV
and many can send their children to school when they can sell
their carvings, weavings, and other hand crafts through SERRV.
Haiti has been specifically assisted with tents, canned food,
linens, radios and flashlights plus giving $300 grants to buy
what they need most, whether it be housing, food, tools, etc. If
you would like to support in giving this way, just write a check
to SERRV and we can send that to the main office in Maryland.
Either way of giving is appreciated.

Katherine
In just a few short weeks, I will arrive in Oregon and be ready to
start my summer as your Seminarian Pastor (I suppose that’s a
descriptive name for my role over the summer). I imagine, then, that you
all might want to know a little about me!
You might have heard some of the basics already – I’m a student at
the University of Chicago Divinity School, finishing my second year of
studies towards a Master of Divinity. I am part of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), a denomination in full partnership with the
United Church of Christ, and I am seeking ordination in 2012. I am in a
dual-degree program with University of Chicago’s School of Social
Service Administration, so in 2012 I will graduate with an MDiv as well
as an A.M. in Social Work (the equivalent of a Masters of Social Work).
This fall I will begin courses at the SSA, and in my fourth year I will
be taking both SSA and Divinity school classes.
I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and went to college at Furman
University in Greenville, SC and earned a BA in English, with lots of
Religion classes on the side. I’ve been interested in Seminary since my
early college years, and needed some time to figure out why and what I
wanted to do with it. I’m still figuring that out! I’ve been in Chicago
2 years now, and before that I spent a year in Indianapolis working with
the General offices of the Disciples church, all of that interwoven with
many church and mission experiences in which God has been shaping my
call. I am passionate about congregational ministry, but am still
discerning whether my call is more towards being a pastor long-term or
if it will be more focused on Social Work, or combining the two!
My first trip to Oregon was in the summer of 2005 for the Disciples
General Assembly – my first time in the Pacific Ocean – it was cold!! I
loved Portland and beautiful Oregon, so I’m very excited about getting
to be there for the summer. I wanted to come to Oregon to be in the same
place as my boyfriend, Mark, and I feel blessed that such a wonderful
opportunity came up to work with you at Smyrna – I really could not have
dreamed of anything more fulfilling to do with the summer.
When I’m not working with you all at Smyrna, I hope to do a lot of
hiking and exploring over the summer. I try to stay active – I grew up
horseback riding, and have missed that in the city. I love being
outside, whether it’s for hiking, weeding a garden (my gardening skills
are limited, but weeding is so meditative!), or just reading a book in
the sun.
Overall, I’m especially looking forward to hearing all of your
stories. I can’t wait to meet all of you and hear about your histories
and your hopes for the future. I hope to be a resource to you, as well –
I know that I have so much to learn from you, and if I can help you as
well I’d love to return the favor. Looking forward to meeting you!
In love and
peace, Katherine

New Members
and Baptism

On Sunday, May 9, Smyrna took in two new members.
Catherine Mosiman joined our church by letter of transfer
from the Lincoln City Congregational United Church of Christ,
and Deborah Hancox joined by affirmation of faith.
Catherine is rejoining Smyrna having been a member of Smyrna
many years ago. Catherine is retired and enjoys sewing,
crocheting, and painting. For many years Catherine was a care
giver, and some of you may remember when she cared for members
of Smyrna. Debbie currently works as a care giver, and has
worked in the past as a secretary. Debbie’s hobbies are sewing,
writing short stories, and going to the beach. Debbie has been
active with our stitch club for a couple of years.

Also on May 9, Smyrna celebrated the sacrament of baptism.
Krissy Johnston and Kiara Hollingsworth were baptized
making Mother’s day a special day for us this year.

MISSION/WORK TRIP
NEWS.
The Central Pacific Conference has committed to another mission/work
project at Back Bay Mission, Biloxi MS November 13-20, 2010
We have reserved spaces in their new facility which can house up to
about 46 people. We will join up with a church group from St. Johns UCC
of Kankakee, IL. There are two dorm rooms, one for the men and one for
the women with bath facilities for each. The beds are bunk beds and you
will need to bring your own bedding and towels. The kitchen is furnished
to serve both groups, with each group planning and cooking their own
meals. Back Bay Mission’s (BBM) requirement includes: $50 fee per person
for the week of lodging. BBM requires that participants be 14 years old
and up. For every 5 youths 14-17 in age we need at least 1 adult. There
will be waiver of liability forms from parents and adults.
Total cost per person, in the past, has consisted of about $230 for
food, van rental and gas. Each person will need to arrange their own
airline reservation to arrive on Saturday and return on the following
Saturday. Our work at the mission begins on Sunday and ends on Friday.
In the past we have flown to Atlanta and then back to Biloxi and some
people have flown through Dallas, TX to Biloxi. The tickets have been
around $400 round trip.
Further details will be forthcoming. If you are interested you will
need to send $50, check made payable to Central Pacific Conference, to
the conference office at 0245 S. W. Bancroft Street, Portland, OR 97239.
The conference email address is
centralpacific@cpcucc.org. If you would like to see what is
happening at Back Bay Mission go to
www.backbaymission.com.
Smyrna will be working on a fund raiser to help anyone with their
expenses who wants to attend. You can also talk with Mary Lee Schuebel
or Barbara Daniels about their past experiences with this mission.
The Soup & Pie
Luncheon, May 16 at Smyrna UCC raised $616 for the
building fund.

Highlights

One of the books I was reading recently suggested that American
Christians are a religion of highlighters. The author was
suggesting that we like to go through the scriptures and
highlight certain verses. You can tell a lot a person by the
verses they highlight. We usually highlight the verses that we
agree with or that we like. I couldn’t help but wonder if the
verses meant for us are the verses we don’t highlight. The
verses we don’t immediately highlight may be meant especially
for us.
God may be behind us, God may be in the verses we don’t
immediately underline, and God may be in the people around us.
Some churches are careful about who they let in as members. Our
church is an inclusive church where everyone is welcome no
matter where they are on their faith journey. And we want
everyone to come- because we never know who is going to reveal
something about God to us. It is very important that our tent be
big enough that everyone feels included, and free to share their
experience of the Holy.
It is also important to remember that our church is not just
a gathering of the saints, but also a hospital for sinners. As
each of us experiences God in our own way, we also need to
encourage others to experience God and share that experience
with us so we can learn from them.
The verses that I underline are usually about justice and
caring for the poor. The people in Ghana are very poor (living
on less that $2 a day), and I am truly grateful for the
opportunity to spend the summer working with and for them. As
you have already found out, I am always on the look out for a
new mission project that can help us live out our faith- a faith
that is about both thinking and doing.
I am also looking forward to hearing about your experiences
this summer as Katherine Raley shares her faith with you,
teaching you about the verses she underlines, and the songs her
spirits sings. We are on this faith journey together. I will be
reporting my summer activities on the Smyrna web site and
following your life through the Behold.
Have a great summer- and remember the highlights so you can
share them with me in the fall. Pastor Dave

Ruby Barnes, April 16, 1918
– May 17, 2010
Ruby Charlotte Morris Barnes was born on April 16, 1918 at Colton,
Oregon to William and Myra Wells. She had three sisters and three
brothers. She died on May 17, 2010 at her home in rural Molalla, Oregon
at the age of 92. During her childhood she lived in the Colton, Mulino
and Molalla areas.
She married Donald Morris on August 18, 1934 and they lived in the
Molalla area except for a few years in Prairie City, Oregon. She raised

driving the motor home on camping trips. After Don died in 1978, Ruby
married Elmer “Buster” Barnes. Ruby and Buster became snowbirds spending
winters down south.
Ruby enjoyed needlework, crocheting, and quilting. She quilted with
the ladies of Smyrna United Church of Christ, the ladies of Oregon City

Family was very important to Ruby, and she enjoyed spending time with
them.
