2004 Vacation Bible School
June 14 - June
18, 2004 (Susan reporting
....)
Here are pictures from the this year's
VBS. The theme is "Under Construction" which is written by Habitat for
Humanity.
The first night the kids made tool caddy/planter boxes, the
second night they made birdhouses, and the third night they planted petunias in
the planter boxes. We have had a total of 28 kids sign up so far--we had 4 new
ones come tonight! The kids are divided into "crews" of saws, hammers, drills
and screwdrivers and each crew has a "crew leader" who stays with them for the
whole evening. We start the evening off with an "Early Bird Activity" which is
led by Jon and Susie Schriever.
On Wednesday, Jon brought his tractor and demonstrated how
it worked and let kids get on it with him.
We have dinner followed by "Scales and Measures" (music),
Partner Family Dramas (performed by the youth and which shows a family going
through the process of getting to build a HFH house), and "Passing the Hard Hat"
(the offering collected will be given to our local Habitat for Humanity
affiliate). Then the kids rotate between the four different "job sites"
which are Blueprints--Bible Activities, Break Time--Games, Hard Hat
Area--Crafts, and Survey--Community stories (this class is being taught by Kim
Parker, Executive Director, and Pam White, Church Relations Director, of the
North Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity).
Each of the kids and volunteers were given canvas tool
belts to wear during the week and then will take them home on Friday. The
crew leaders wear hard hats so their crews can identify them.
The weather has been beautiful and has allowed us to have
early bird activities, dinner, games and crafts outside.
