Trust Fund.
The Cemetery Committee is very
pleased at the growth of the Trust Fund. The balance as of March
31, 2005
is $37,618.
The committee’s goal is to raise
$50,000. Our Trust Fund drive started in mid 1999, and
had hoped to be there by now. We are
patient if it takes awhile longer.
The purpose of this trust fund is to provide for the permanent
maintenance of the cemetery. To help reach our goal, please consider
remembering the cemetery in your will or trust or by requesting
memorials to the
Cemetery Trust Fund in lieu
of flowers.
Theft:
Last Spring, the lock
to the storage shed was cut. The leaf blower and string trimmer were
stolen. When the thieves came back for the riding lawnmower, they found
it had been removed to a safe location. Subsequently, the blower and
trimmer were replaced, and a newer stronger lock was installed.
We have many flower containers available
from previous years and
we’ll put them out for Memorial Day.
Feel
free to use them.

From: Growing up
with Yoder and the Yoders by Muriel Van Veen
… During the first service, the
Rev. Mr. Parker suggested that because the congregation was poor
financially, but rich in zeal and spiritual life, it should be
known as Smyrna (from The New Testament book of Revelation).
Within just a few months, Rev. Parker decided to become a
Congregationalist. Wishing to keep him as pastor, and because
the Congregationalists were then the only denomination allowing
women to hold church office, Smyrna voted to change its
affiliation also.
With a membership of 47, the church was
dedicated December 1, 1892, with Rev. Parker and State
Superintendent Rev. Cephas Clapp presiding.
... Catherine Yoder
Lantz the earliest "Oregon Pioneer" of the Yoder family, was the
first person to be buried in the Smyrna cemetery, in 1891. ...
